David ‘Max’ McAlister Perpetual Shield:
Best Club Person

The Max McAlister Shield is West Brunswick’s most prestigious club-wide award, and the last to be presented each year. Voted on by the committee in a 3-2-1 system, the award is presented to any member of the club who has gone above and beyond in their service to the club throughout the year.

Raymond ‘Roy’ Barrett Perpetual Shield:
Best Matchday Volunteer

Not many will know of Roy Barrett, who the award is named for. Roy never played for the club, but his contribution and dedication to the club was exceptional.

Roy ran the boundary for the club for about a decade in the 1980s.  He was a man who was happiest having run the boundary for the club during the afternoon, then having a beer with the players in the rooms in the evening. Sadly, Roy Barrett passed away some year ago now. The news came to the club through a letter from the Estate Trustees, informing us that Roy had left 50% of his estate to the West Brunswick Amateur Football Club - the first time in the club’s 59-year history that anyone had left us anything upon their passing – and Roy hadn’t even pulled on the guernsey.

The Raymond ‘Roy’ Barrett Perpetual Shield gives reward to a person who has stood out during the season for their exceptional service in volunteering on match days, filling roles for our operations team such as running the boundary, goal umpiring, timekeeping, running water, etc.  The award is judged by the football operations managers and team.

Shane Devers Perpetual Trophy:
Best First-Year Player

The Shane Devers Best First Year Player Perpetual Trophy is awarded to two first year players at the end of each season as judged by the coaching team. The best-first year player award was previously awarded for each team, but has been centralised since 2017. The centralised award was named in honour of Shane ‘Devo’ Devers.

The award was chosen to honour Shane for a number of reasons, starting with his huge impact in his first year at the club. Throughout his time at West Brunswick, he welcomed countless first year players and made them feel immediately at home. In his role as coach of the thirds, he fostered the talent of many first-year players, seeing many go on to play reserves and senior footy, and he played an important role in West Brunswick's campaign to grow women's footy, coaching the first women's team in their inaugural exhibition game.

The Shane Devers Best First Year Player Perpetual Trophy has become one of West Brunswick’s most prestigious awards: our equivalent to the AFL’s Rising Star award.
